Who is so power hungry that they would rather see thousands of innocent people die, and a successful economy fall into shambles than give up that power?

“Ethnic groups associated with one candidate or the other … were expelled at the point of knives or poisoned arrows.”

I suppose it is a clash of ethnic groups. However, these groups have worked together to create a bustling economy with a tourism industry that is worth more than $1 billion a year. It seems unfortunate that the leaders do not realize the nation is far better off united than factionalized.
