The mayor of Toledo, OH does not want the U.S. Marines to conduct urban training within city limits. As the Marines arrived this weekend to begin their exercises, they were "greeted" by a member of the mayors administration telling them they could not train in Toledo. This was no surprise training exercise, the city had been informed last month and press releases were given out the beginning of last week. The Marines have trained in Toledo four other times. The mayors reason? It scares the citizens.

Reaction: Scares the citizens? A couple of quotes provided by WTOL-TV Toledo:

"No, I feel we would have welcomed the marines."

"They're here to protect us. The mayor has no say in what they can and cannot do and I don't think the citizens have a problem with it," says another woman.

"I think Carty scares the people more than the Marines scare the people"

And from MSNBC:

"I told him [the mayor], as a former Marine, that if one young Marine's life is saved because of training he or she received in Toledo, Ohio, then it was worth the inconvenience."

Those don't sound like terrified citizens to me. No matter one's personal opinion on the war, everyone supports those ordered to go fight. If an urban training exercise is going to better prepare these men for battle, then by all means please practice. I hope mayor Finkbeiner wasn't planning on running for reelection.
