"we are in trouble..."
We are in WAY over our heads. We did not know what we were getting into and still don't know. We have no comprehension of how extreme their ideology is; it is beyond what most people can imagine. I truly believe there has never been a more dangerous enemy.
"how rapidly we will impose ruthlessly on ourselves"
The Patriot Act following the 9/11 attacks is exactly the type of civil liberties infringement Gingrich speaks of. When feeling threatened and scared we support overbearing national security measures in order to calm our fears. However, the government should not impose on our lives in order to keep us safe. The President is urging Congress to pass measure that would make telecommunication companies immune to lawsuits stemming from the un-Constitutional warrantless wiretaps that have been a part of the Patriot Act. The telecom companies should have understood these legality issues and ought to pay the consequences for allowing the government to illegally listen to innocent American citizens' private conversations. They fell victim to Bush's trap; all we want you to do is "help[ed] defend
Keeping America safe does not include taking away our freedom.

Many people will argue that "keeping America safe", under the current circumstances, WILL curtail some of our freedoms, and that is the price we have to pay. Unfortunately, in reality this is probably true. I do not agree, however, that uttering those words is the end of the story, or that we have to arbitrarily give up whatever freedoms that the administration has identified for us to give. Not faced with an easy alternative, it is easy for the administration to sacrifice our freedom of privacy. No doubt that the CIA could possibly or probably find valuable information in private conversations. But the "easy" way to resolve obstacles is not always the best way. There are usually several ways to accomplish an end objective. The "bully" usually fights for the easy way. We just need for him to go back to the solution room and work on a better one.
